Sussex Jazz Magazine Welcomes New Columnist Simon Spillett

Sussex Jazz Magazine is pleased to welcome a new writer to our team. Simon Spillett will be contributing a monthly column to SJM, starting with the November issue.

Spillett is an acclaimed writer and saxophonist who has written for publications such as Jazz Journal and Jazzwise, as well as writing the biography Tubby Hayes – The Long Shadow Of The Little Giant in 2015.

Spillett joins a team of writers and photographers at Sussex Jazz Magazine that includes fellow columnists Eddie Myer, Sam Carelse, Patrick Billingham and Peter Batten, alongside photographers Lisa Wormsley, Anya Arnold and Patricia Pascal and reviewers Jim Burlong and George Richardson.

The magazine was started in 2013 by the editor, writer and musician Charlie Anderson, initially in online and digital formats. Since September 2018 it has produced printed copies which are distributed to jazz venues around Sussex.

Our November features include our new columnist Simon Spillett, along with columns by Eddie Myer and Sam Carelse, plus Jazz News by Charlie Anderson, Big Band Scene by Patrick Billingham and our archive column Pete Recommends by Peter Batten.

Interviews are with bassist Calum Gourlay (who appears on the front cover) and French horn player Jim Rattigan. The Words… feature by Lisa Wormsley is with live painter Gina Southgate. There are live reviews of Rosie Frater-Taylor for New Generation Jazz at The Verdict by Jim Burlong with photos by Anya Arnold and a live review of Skinny Pelembe at Patterns by Charlie Anderson with photography by Lisa Wormsley. Album reviews are by Eddie Myer and George Richardson.

We also have listings for jazz gigs across the Sussex area, together with up-to-date listings on our website here.

If you’re interested in subscribing to Sussex Jazz Magazine, it costs £30 and you get exclusive access to the Subscribers Extra section of the magazine. This month it includes a competition to win the new album from Dave O’Higgins and Rob Luft plus a report on the Women in Jazz concert at The Jazz Cafe, with words and photos by Patricia Pascal.
