Preview: Skinny Pelembe at Patterns

In May this year guitarist, singer and composer Skinny Pelembe released his new album Dreaming Is Dead Now on the Brownswood label.
The multi-talented musician was born in Johannesburg, but grew up in Doncaster and has been part of the new generation of artists to benefit from Gilles Peterson’s Future Bubblers development programme.
His unique way of creating music involves him creating tracks from different samples, often inspired by his dreams, then he has his band re-create the music in a live setting.
In 2017 he released his solo EP Seven Year Curse, followed in 2018 by another EP Sleep More, Make More Friends, which featured collaborative remixed tracks by Hejira, Yazmin Lacey, Sonia Bernardo and Emma-Jean Thackray. Last year he appeared at The Great Escape Festival and in September at Brighton’s Green Door Store. The Guardian named Skinny Pelembe as ‘One to Watch’ in 2019 and this year he appeared at the Love Supreme Festival in Glynde and We Out Here Festival in Abbots Ripton.
His new album, Dreaming Is Dead Now, features the catchy track Spit/Swallow, the eclectic No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish and the dreamy I’ll Be On Your Mind. Skinny Pelembe is currently touring the UK and Ireland this month. An original and highly creative musician, you can expect his live shows to be exciting. As he says, “You’ve got the record anyway so there’s no point in listening to a carbon copy when you come to see it live. You might as well do something different.”
